Do you know that this seemingly insignificant detail has been around for several centuries? For a long time, beautiful trinkets were popular not only at Venetian carnivals. They were used with pleasure by bandits, swindlers and other dubious personalities.

Today we will talk about the history of the creation of masquerade masks and their types.

The history of the appearance of masks

Initially, masks were used for rituals in African tribes. However, special masks for the holidays have appeared in Venice. They were created using the papier-mâché technique. Feathers, jewelry, furs and other attributes were used to decorate the masks. The carnival itself has always been colorful and enchanting. People could not help but like such a grand event. During the holiday, social boundaries were erased, omissions disappeared, problems were forgotten. Over time, carnival processions spread far beyond the borders of Italy.

Masks allowed people to feel much freer. Some enjoyed living incognito so much that they covered their faces almost all year round. There was even a profession of a mask maker, they were so in demand.

Unfortunately, not all citizens used masks for peaceful purposes. Acting under a convenient cover, people began to engage in gambling, debauchery, robbery, violence and murder. It’s amazing how easily humanity takes the path of vice, when its face is covered with a trifling piece of cardboard.

Due to the critical state of affairs, a strict law was passed in the early 17th century. From now on, masks were allowed to be worn only for festive events and nothing more. Violations were punished by very strict methods, up to jail and beating of rods in public.

After some time, at the behest of the Catholic Church, the holidays themselves were banned. Many years passed until masks and carnivals were completely rehabilitated.

Popular types of carnival masks

Traditional Venetian masks fall into two categories: del Arta and classic. Comedy del Arte is a performance that is given on the street. According to one version, this genre arose spontaneously. Once, on one of the streets of Venice, a gentleman made a big scandal. He swore and shouted so selflessly that he quickly attracted the attention of the crowd. Sly traders realized that if there is something that attracts the attention of many people, then you can make good money on it.

This is how Del Arte was born. Street comedians performed in rather ugly masks with long noses like birds’ beaks. Improvisation was encouraged.

Classic masks were only invented for colorful carnivals. Of course, each mask had its own purpose and they looked different. The characters of Pulcinella, Colombina, Arlecchino, Brighella, etc. were popular. The following decorations also belonged to classic masks:

  • Bauta

The ominous mask meant a meeting with death and could only be of two colors: black or white. In the 18th century, the product became widespread among the male sex. In such a mask it was convenient to disappear into the crowd. It was customary to wear black cloaks, triangular hats and scarves with a mask. It was convenient to eat and drink in the bow, while remaining unrecognized. Bautu was especially appreciated by people with not very clean intentions.

  • Moretta

The female version of the mask, which completely covered the face. Moreover, the hostess could only communicate with gestures. The men were delighted with the beautiful strangers in morettes. After all, they looked very mysterious and enigmatic. In fact, there is a peg on the seamy side of the mask that must be held with your teeth all the time, otherwise the mask will simply fall off. That is why the ladies in the morettes are silent all the time.

  • Plague Doctor or Dottore Peste

Once upon a time, medieval Europe suffered a plague epidemic. Doctors did not go door to door in white coats. They had a completely different costume. It was a long cloak and a mask with a huge beak. It was impregnated with aromatic herbs designed to protect the doctor himself from a terrible disease. Cheerful Venetians have turned this frightening piece of costume into a part of the carnival.

  • Cat or gatto

A cute and mischievous cat mask is a frequent guest at the Venetian holiday. A very funny story is connected with its appearance. According to legend, in ancient times there were no cats in the city. The old Chinese had only one. Once, the cat so successfully caught all the mice in the Doge’s palace that the old man was rewarded and left the cat with him. The Chinese man returned to his homeland and with pride for the animal told everyone this story. His neighbor, envious, went to Venice with expensive silks. He thought that for good matter he would be rewarded much more generously. And so it happened. For a good product they gave him a priceless cat.

  • Jester mask

Joker, Jolie, Buffon, here are more variants of the Jester’s names. In many countries, the attitude towards jesters was special. Childishness, jokes and fun were considered special gifts. The jester could always make some coins for food and clothes through funny shows. The traditional Jester mask is performed with a cap and bells at the top.
